Dusk Terrace redefines the California indoor-outdoor relationship at the canyon edge of Topanga State Park. The clients — a couple who divide their time between their New York city apartment and this rural retreat — wanted a patio that felt like a room, but one that surrendered entirely to the landscape by dusk.

The design centers on a broad limestone terrace cantilevered eight feet beyond the home's footprint, its perimeter marked by a continuous bench of the same stone. A steel pergola above is threaded with a custom lighting system that mimics the fading light gradient of the canyon beyond. The result is a space that needs no art, no ornament — only the spectacle of the canyon turning gold and then dark.

The project also included a complete relandscaping of the hillside below, with native California sagebrush and manzanita reinforcing the sense of site specificity.
